This article explains how to insert and use variable data when building emails in the Legacy Email Editor in AMS+. Variable data is used in Email Marketing (Legacy campaigns) and Automated Workflow (Legacy) email actions.

Requirements
- Email Marketing or Automated Workflow must be activated in your agency's AMS+ account.
- Only the Account Owner can activate it. Learn more.
- You must be logged into AMS+ as an Agency User.
- You must be assigned to a Security Group with the Manage Email Marketing or Manage Automated Workflow permission.
Insert variable data into an email
- Open an email in the Legacy Email Editor.
- Place your cursor in the email content.
- Select a variable data field from the editor.

- Variable data inserts as a placeholder in brackets.
- Example:
- "Dear [IndFirstName] [IndLastName]"
- Example:
- When the email is sent, the placeholder is replaced with data from the recipient's record.
- If a variable data field does not populate, verify that the corresponding field contains data in the record.
- Variable data inserts as a placeholder in brackets.
Use variable data in the email subject
- Copy and paste variable data into the email subject field.
- Example: "[IndFirstName], are you ready for open enrollment?"
- When previewing or sending the email, the subject displays the actual value instead of the placeholder.
